A Glossary of Printing Terms

Definitions:

Bitmap Image:
An image construted from individual dots or pixels set to a grid like a mosaic. Most digital photographs and screen captures are bitmap images.

Bleed:
Text or art that extends beyond the the trim page boundaries or the crop marks on one or more sides of the page.

CYMK:
Abbreviation for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, the 4 process color inks.

Color Proof:
A representation matching the appearance of the final printed piece.

Composite Proof:
A version of a page in which all the colors appear on one sheet to represent the full page. Colors can be displayed as shades of gray.

Crop Marks:
Short, fine lines used as guides for final trimming of the pages within a press sheet.

FPO:
Abbrevation For Position Only. Low-quality art is placed in position to indicate placement and size of the camera ready piece. An FPO is not intended for reproduction but only as a guide for the prepress service provider.

Grayscale:
Representation of colors in varying shades of gray.

Keyline:
A thin border around a picture or a box indicating where to place pictures.

Knockout:
A printing technique that prints overlapping objects without mixing inks. The ink for the underlying elements does not print (knocks out) in the ares where the object overlaps.

Misregistration:
The unwanted result of incorrectly aligned colors on a finished printed piece due to many factors including paper stretch and plate alignment.

Overprint:
A printing method that prints one ink on top of another ink to create a new color.

Rasterize (RIP):
The process of converting digital information into dots before they are imaged onto film or paper.

RGB:
Abbreviation for Red, Green, Blue.

Spot Color:
A premixed colored ink that is not one of or a combination of the four process color inks.

Tiff:
Abbreviation for Tagged Image File Format. Bitmap images containing grayscale or color information.

Trim page size:
Area of the finished page after the job is printed, bound, and trimmed.
